Recommended Combinations for 2016

SAVE OVER £750 when you combine South Africa's Super Six with Mountain Gorillas of Rwanda for one of the world’s most incredible wildlife experiences in 2016.

Complete your African wildlife experience by combining our South Africa and Rwanda photographic safaris, and add in the wildlife encounter of a lifetime: mountain gorillas.

Our tour of Rwanda begins in Kigali with cultural and community highlights. We then head through the most beautiful regions of Rwanda including Lake Kivu, and Nyugwe forest where we will encounter rare chimpanzees and spectacular black and white colobus and golden monkeys along the way.

The climax of any Rwanda tour must be meeting and photographing mountain gorillas.  We always make time for two gorilla treks to allow you to exerience different families, dynamics and personalities of these most human of animals.  This also ensures you will create the most captivating images possible, reflecting the emotion, movement and interactions of the gorillas as they socialize in their family groups. Here we also trek to meet the region's charming golden monkeys.

We will continue to hone our photographic techniques, and extend our creativity, during our week at Zimanga in South Africa, where the photographic opportunities are endless and varied.

RECOMMENDED  ADD-ON

Umlani Leopard-Focussed MiniSafari

We are delighted to offer an optional add-on at Umlani Bushcamp, which is the perfect complement to Zimanga.  This beautiful eco lodge sits within Timbavati Game Reserve, which borders the Kruger National Park and Sabi Sands, and is one of South Africa's premier spots for leopard-focussed safaris.

As with Zimanga, we have booked out exclusive use of Umlani for our group, so there will be no other visitors intruding on our wildlife encounters and - importantly for this area - nobody shifting us off our sightings after a few minutes, which sadly is routine in nearby reserves.  It also means we have exclusive access to Umlani's treehouse, where it is possible to book an overnight stay as well as use it as a waterhole hide.

This 3 day extension includes:

  • transfers from Zimanga & to outbound airport

  • 3 nights accommodation

  • award-winning food and local drinks on full board basis

  • reserve fees

  • morning and evening game drives in dedicated photographer vehicles

  • optional walking safaris each day

  • exclusive use of Umlani's waterhole tree house hide (a limited number of 3 overnight stays are available here on a first come basis)

  • all photographic tuition

  • all safari guiding

Of course there will be an incredible range of South Africa's iconic wildlife to photograph, but leopards are a particular draw here, along with reputedly the best birding in South Africa - over 500 species, including many large raptors, are recorded in the Greater Kruger area.

So all in all we reckon this is the perfect way to round off our Zimanaga 2018 photographic safari!

Dates: 13-16 July 2018
Rates: £1290 per person

Why November?

For photographers this is a wonderful time of year to be in Botswana.  The crowds of high season have all gone home, and yes it can be pretty hot, but the light is nothing short of sensational so we photographers tend not to mind it too much!

At this far end of the dry season the bush is sparse, making wildlife visibility good.  Many different species are concentrated around remaining areas of water, often leading to unusual behaviour and dynamic interactions.  And when it does finally rain the reactions of individual animals are a joy to photograph: Trai is a big fan of a little rain on Safari!

Mount Kinabalu

Our final location takes us upwards, from tropical rainforest through varied habitats to cooler montane forests of oak, rhododendron, and conifer.  Mount Kinabalu is a birding and flora paradise, where improbably brilliant colours flit through the canopy and light up the forest floor.

We set out early on the mountain walking trails, peering through the clearing mist for tree pies, whistling thrushes and drongos as they feed on insects attracted to the lodge lights during the night.  Straying further afield, we will also hope to see hornbills, trogons, wren-babblers, flowerpeckers, sunbirds and the endemic spiderhunter.  Birds of prey are never far away either, including the mountain serpent eagle.

The park's flora is a also a delight. One of the world’s largest flowers, the gigantic 1.7m rafflesia grows here, along with over 800 orchid species and the world’s richest collection of pitcher plants (nepenthes).

As well as birds, flora and terrific mountain landscape photography, we will still keep an eye out for elusive orangutan, the three deer species that live on the mountain, Malayan weasel, oriental small-clawed otter, and leopard cat.

Continuing our commitment to supporting Kenya's leading conservation projects, we are offering a pre-extension to this year's Mara Predator Conservation Programme fundraiser safari.  We will spend 4 incredible days in Lewa Conservancy, home of 170 rhinos and a world leading conservation programme to protect them, and support the communities of the area.

Photographically this pre-extension makes a terrific addition to our time with MPCP, as rhinos are extremely rare to see in the Mara.  Of course there is much more to see in Lewa too, including the largest single population of Grevy's zebra in the world, reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx, gerenuk gazelle and Somali ostrich, none of which are present in the Mara.  The conservancy intermittently hosts a pack of wild dog too!

Brooks Falls

This is probably the most famous and iconic place to photograph huge brown bears - or grizzlies - anywhere in the world.  Those incredible shots of bears catching leaping salmon in their mouths are often shot here. Surprisingly there is not much in the way of accommodation here, but we have managed to secure 8 beds in the Lodge at the peak of the bear viewing season.  It's basic but fun, and the only way to access bears in action in dawn and dusk light.

The Kenai Peninsula, which lies immediately to the south of Anchorage, boasts some of Alaska's most impressive rivers, mountains, icefields, and coastline.  It also offers convenient access to some of Alaska's most pristine marine habitats and many of the iconic fjords and glaciers that immediately spring to mind when you think of Alaska.

Katmai National Park

At the base of the Alaska Peninsula, KNP is home to the largest protected population of Brown Bears in the world, and for the past 2 decades it has been the subject of a hugely successful and innovative approach to organised bear viewing, where small groups of bear photographers (maximum 6 people) encounter the bears on foot in the company of an expert guide. This has produced a unique situation whereby something akin to a mutually observed, inter-species truce exists between humans and bears.

Accessible by floatplane or wheeled bushplane, the Katmai Coast is every aspiring bear watcher's dream ticket where giant Coastal Brown Bears can be observed catching salmon where river meets ocean in summer. Nowhere else on the planet will you see more and bigger bears, up close and personal, than you will in Katmai where the bear viewing experience is all about being on the ground with these magnificent animals, with very few people around.  Access this amazing brown bear habitat by small boat/skiff and disembark to walk to locations where bears are feeding. Experience full days of bear viewing with packed lunches taken in the field.  Here we will seek large males in particular.

Anchorage

Despite developing into a cultural hub, Anchorage still has wildlife on the doorstep in abundance.  A gentle bike ride out of town along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail offers the possibility to see Beluga Whales in Cook Inlet if the tide is in, and encounter moose, black bear and other wildlife along the trail.

Book Safely & With Peace Of Mind:  Covid-19 Protection & Precautions

A personal note from Trai

"The safety of my guests has always been uppermost in my mind, and I have given much thought to appropriate social distancing measures for my workshops.  These are thankfully being relaxed at the time of writing, though we may need to revisit them at times in future.

Thank you in advance for your adherence to any measures deemed necessary, and for keeping us all safe while we continue to explore new places and incredible photography!"

COVID PROMISE

Fairness and flexibility are always my watchwords when it comes to my guests' safari experience.

If not we will offer you a comprehensive range of flexible alternative options including postponement, re-booking to another destination, or refund.

My clients over the last couple of years have highly praised this Covid Promise, which in terms of fairness, flexibility, transparency and responsiveness has outshone many major companies.

What Guests Say About My Covid Precautions

"At this time of social distancing, and the wearing of face masks when at a distance of 1 metre or less, it is necessary to continue with as many pastimes as we can.

Having experienced one of your Photographic Workshops I believe my safety and the safety of the whole group was well managed and at no time did I consider myself at risk.

I consider the workshop met all necessary controls to maintain a safe environment.  At the same time, interaction was still possible to provide the necessary coaching along with questions and answers.

Overall, the session was without doubt a valuable experience.  I learnt some very useful tips and the day gave me further confidence to tackle tricky lighting conditions in the future. Looking forward to other workshops!"

We work together with you and your child and will advise you on everything from the on/off button to camera settings for different types of shots, how to focus and expose your photographs correctly, picture composition and how to best capture the movements and behaviour of wildlife.

You will photograph beautiful British owls as they perch and fly free in their natural surroundings, and will also learn how to make a simple hide, allowing you to get closer to wildlife when you head out into the wild.  You will even have the chance to use camouflage cream (optional) to help you blend into the bushes and stay invisible to the animals. (please bring wet wipes and old clothes if you don't want to go home looking like Rambo!)

Back with the creepy crawlies we will look at how to capture their fine and delicate details, and all their weird and wonderful natural behaviour.

We will also help with guidance on photographing each other, so you really will capture some special memories.

Places for this workshop are limited, so book early to avoid disappointment,

and please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.

" It's a great way of bonding with the kids, and could start a shared interest that lasts a lifetime."    Trai Anfield, workshop leader
